This Week

I took my mugs off to be bisque fired on Sunday, and I’m also looking forward to trying out some underglaze pastel crayons I bought, along with an underglaze pencil. Unlike liquid underglazes, to use crayons and pencils the clay must have been bisque fired first to make the surface hard enough to work on; so I left a couple of mugs and a vase plain as samples to practice on.

I don’t have a kiln at home, but my artist/potter neighbour down the road does. We’ve worked out an arrangement that benefits us both. So I pack up my work in a bin and run it over to her place either with the help of a girlfriend with a car, or load it into my wheelbarrow. ( Reminder, I live on a tiny island.)

The week’s also been spent settling in with our new dog Sequoia, a Boarder- Heeler cross and an amazingly smart girl! She’s taken to her new home like a champ, and is a perfect fit for us! It’s been twenty years since we lost our last dog, a Schipperke named Smokey. He also was an awesome little guy who came to us at three years old from the local SPCA. Took to our family as if he was born to us. Still miss him.

I’ve been having a lot of fun with my Sunday Original Song Challenge, although having headaches with consistent posting of the videos via Youtube! I thought I had the wrinkles ironed out, only to find another wrinkle. None-the-less, they’ll get posted each Sunday. So far this song challenge is becoming rather cathartic for me; different from just journaling and Morning Pages.

Today the sun is shining, a beautiful spring day, and beckons me outside to think over the vegetable garden plot and its preparations to be made, and to play in the yard with my hound ๐Ÿ™‚ ~

Recovering Creative

I live on a tiny island on the Canadian west coast with about 300 of my neighbours. I am a Red Seal chef and certified baker (retired), an artist, an amateur photographer. I write, (unpublished so hesitate to call myself A Writer) sing, and can bang out some reasonable sounding chords on a guitar. And I grow a veggie garden. Older, wiser, and armed with insights and experience, I am on a conscience pursuit of reclaiming my creative life. I see it as a career change. Next level.

  1. Dogs are the best!! I think you will be so happy to have another canine in your life – they bring exercise and comfort but also smelly farts!

  2. My dog is Smokey ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’—
and I’m a potter too …or like to think of myself as one. ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„
I got into it whilst I was in Jamaica but laid off a bit when I returned home (Sri Lanka) . Then joined two studios but potting is all about sitting down at home and unwinding right so finally got myself a wheel and broke my leg the next week. Recovered now and plan to return to it after Easter.
You’ve got a great photo here .. clear and well defined. Guess it is from your island … where exactly is it ?

    1. I’m just returning to pottery too – I took ceramics as part of my BFA back in 1977 (!) and haven’t done it since. Bought an old electric kick wheel from a neighbour. Thankfully it’s like riding a bike ๐Ÿ™‚ Having a lot of fun with it ! Yes, I take all my own photos for my blog, and this is on my little island near Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. The city is putting in a new general dock that is adjacent to our dog park.
      Thanks for engaging ~ Cheers
